To maximize our international engagement and secure the interest of Maldives by leading the Government of Maldives’ efforts to promote human rights, strengthen democracy and good governance, and take appropriate action on climate change.

 

Bilateral Relations

The Maldives established diplomatic relations with Germany in 1966. The first Ambassador of Maldives to German, Her Excellency Ms. Iruthisham Adam, presented her credentials to His Excellency Mr. Christian Wulff, President of Germany, on 14 March 2011. The Embassy of the Maldives in Germany was Officially opened on 28 September 2016.

Over the years, Maldives and Germany have enjoyed a cordial relationship, and Germany has played a significant role in the development of Maldives. During the 2005 Tsunami disaster, Germany aided in the relief operations and provided supplies such as water purification units to produce drinking water and laboratory equipment. German Red Cross also implemented projects in the reconstruction and provision of (medical) equipment for Health Posts, Health Centres, and Hospitals, as well as support for the installation of a First Aid System and a Water Safety System in the Maldives.

An Air Services Agreement between Germany and the Maldives was signed on 10 November 1993. A follow-up Memorandum of Understanding to the Agreement was signed in Male’ on 8 February 1995.

Germany is the second largest tourist market for the Maldives, and the number of Germans traveling to the Maldives is increasing yearly.  Maldives is a regular participant at the ITB Berlin fair and was ITB’s Official partner country in 2016.

The Embassy

The establishment of the Maldives Embassy in Germany signified the excellent relationship between and the Maldives over the years and coincided with the 50 year anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries. germany is among the leading tourist market in the Maldives as well. The embassy is committed to promoting cooperation on strategic, political, and economic issues, including extensive engagement between the two counties.

Ambassador H.E Aishath Shaan Shakir

President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih appointed Ms. Aishath Shaan Shakir as Ambassador of the Republic of Maldives to the Federal Republic of Germany and presented her with a letter of credence on 20th July 2022.

The newly appointed Ambassador of the Republic of Maldives to the Federal Republic of Germany, Ms. Aishath Shaan Shakir began her Foreign Service career in 1984 and has immensely contributed to the Foreign Service of the Maldives both abroad and at home.

Ms. Aishath Shaan Shakir served as the Deputy Ambassador to Saudi Arabia in 2011, and later in 2014, served as the Deputy High Commissioner to Malaysia. From December 2016 to October 2020, Her Excellency Shaan served as the Ambassador/High Commissioner of Maldives to Bangladesh.

She was appointed as the Chief of Protocol in November 2020, the position in which she served till she was appointed as the Ambassador of Maldives to Germany.

Her Excellency Ms. Jameela Ali Khalid is the first resident Ambassador of Maldives to Germany. She presented her credentials to Federal German President Joachim Gauck on March 2017.
