According to the census carried out in 2014, by 2054, the majority of the Maldivian population will consist of people above the age of 45 years. It estimates that in the coming 25 years, the Maldivian population will consist of 65,000 people above the age of 65 years. Therefore, with this increase in the number of elderly people, it is foreseen that the need and demand for elderly homes would increase. It is also forecasted that the norms in families taking care of elderly as is the situation now would undergo a shift, requiring establishmentbased care for the elderly.

Therefore, through this project the Government aims to provide the highest quality of care, ensuring a comfortable and supportive environment where individuality, dignity, and quality of life are paramount to its residents. The centre will be designed to provide relevant services for elderly, alongside with nursing care facilities for the bedridden and provide awareness and focus group sessions for the elderly on being more health aware. The aim of the Government is privatising the elderly home and act as the monitoring body. An “Elderly Home Management Committee” is to be established for the sustainability of the elderly care home.
